Sutras of Enlightened Wheels
- Our aim in building wheels is simply to build wheels – a process that is more collaboration than production. Building wheels is a natural meditation. Wheel building is about reconciling opposing forces in such a way that they form an optimal synergy. This synergy in turn maintains the rim’s form: centered (dished), round, and true.
- Optimal wheel synergy occurs when its constituent elements work in harmony. Harmony is achieved through uniform distribution of weight and tension. A seasoned wheel builder can pluck a spoke and make sure that each note is in tune – but we still double check with tension meters to assure that each spoke works equally and in tandem to bear the weight of the rider and optimize the distribution of torque from the cog to the rim. This process, in conjunction with wheel aerodynamics, make for “fast” wheels that are also stiff and strong.
- While we value enlightened wheels and strive to build the wheel from the lightest possible components, When one element of wheel performance is elevated in importance – harmony is disrupted and wheel synergy is sacrificed, making for a slower, overall more fragile wheel.
- There is an Ai, or blend to be had between builder and wheel – but perhaps more importantly is the “do” or way of harmony between wheel and rider. That is why we speak with prospective customers prior to each build – to make sure that spoke count, rim type, cost, and intent are all joined into the process of your own enlightened wheel set.
